My dad had to put up with crap like this all throughout his childhood -- religious leaders telling you exactly how to live, how to think, how to do everything. They don't force anything on you though, so break the rules only at the riducules of the morons who believe the leaders. This is the exat same kind of behavior (not quite as exreme, but close) that I have seen from super-christians. "Fine, go ahead and break the rule. I warned you, and now your going to hell."

Its like going to a religious private school in America, except in Iran, such religious teaching is of course public education and supported by the government. I think American has this in a much milder form in people who want to teach creationism in schools and teach abstinence as sex-ed.

The Iranian people I have met, at home and here at the university in Japan, some of them quietly believe in their faith like they always have, not forcing their opinions on anyone. Some are more than happy to be away from religion entirely, (my dad included). Those who are really super-religious tend to stay in Iran where they feel more comfortable.
