170 - Shaun of the Dead mini-review

This half-comedy and half-horror flick is totally half-assed. Simon Pegg plays Shaun, a loser who uses a zombie invasion as the chance to prove himself to his girlfriend. Jokes consist primarily of the characters hitting the zombies with records and children's toys, with the occasional squabbling in the middle of a chase thrown in for good measure. Attempts to spoof the zombie-sub-genre only serve to adopt the weaknesses of those films, while retaining practically none of the damning satire of the better entries such as Dawn of the Dead (1978). Lost opportunities abound.
