402 - Raising Arizona review

The Coen brothers’ second directorial effort establishes one of their most enduring and incredible traits quite early on: though their films will vary wildly, they’ll each be instantly recognizable as theirs, laced with an offbeat energy that can be bleak or joyous, humming quietly or screaming, all the while maintaining its singularity. It also establishes their gift of the ever-so-slightly bizarre through its story, which concerns the efforts of a bumpkin odd couple (Nicolas Cage and Holly Hunter as a petty thief and policewoman) to start a family by absconding with one of the quints of a wealthy local businessman. Nearly everyone speaks in a sort of rural-noir tongue, while the manic energy gives much of the film the feel of a sweet roller coaster that lasts just a tad too long. Despite the tone and pitch, pic features some of the most notable pathos out of the Coen’s filmography. Enthralling in its weirdness and eclectic set of characters, “Raising Arizona” instantly becomes one of the brother’s most notable efforts, though perhaps not among their very best.

Well written ... at this point I just can't judge this movie objectively. My love runs too deep.

BTW, if you'd ever love to guest blog on my site, let me know.

Good review James, "Raising Arizona" to me is one of those films I watch and enjoy yet also don't, it's in an odd limbo for me.

Are you planning on continuing the Coen Brothers trend I see that you have going? It would be interesting to read that.

I wish I was still in Iowa so we could sit down and watch a film together, I'm sure we would have had some great conversations about films and everything else.

Looks as if it may be most amusing.

Christian: Thanks! I perhaps underrated it a little. I'd be thrilled to guest blog on your site some time.

Will: I'm planning on covering all their films. They're very tricky to review, at least for me, so it might take a while. I hope you can swing back through CF one day so we could catch a screening of something.

Tor: It certainly is.
