539 - You Aught to Know - They Can't All Be Winners, Can They?

When putting together a top films list, some pictures are just indispensable. Whether the list concerns films of one year, a genre, or an actor's career, some images that come to mind are just too powerful, so definitive to our memories of the subject that their presence on an account of one's preferences is assured beyond all doubt.

Alas, the top 10 list holds great difficulty for the avid movie watcher. Even the discriminating cinephile will see a great number of films that illuminate the mind's fondest feelings. Thus, it's inevitable that a number of candidates will hit the chopping block in order to make room for the truly essential selections.

This must have weighed on some, because a sizable number of You Aught to Know participants shared films that just barely missed the cut, even though I never formally requested such information. Thus, I though it wise to acknowledge the "almost made its" of You Aught to Know, films that touched voter's hearts even if there were at least ten other films ultimately deemed preferable.

Also, I'd like to point my readers over to good pal and You Aught to Know voter Steve Carlson's site, where you'll find the 2009 edition of the pretigious Muriel Awards unfolding. Founded by Steve and Paul Clark (also a pal and You Aught to Know voter) in 2006, the awards unite an array of online talent (including yours truly, if you'd stoop so low as to refer to me as "talent") to vote for their favorites of cinema for that year. Sort of like the Oscars, but cheaper and with a smarter voting base. And a full confession is necessary: I modeled the scoring system for You Aught to Know on the one employed by the Muriels. So if you are willing to invest time into reading this, do yourself a favor and watch the results there!

Next time on You Aught to Know: The Lord of the Rings Trilogy
