540 - You Aught to Know - 21-22+: The Lord of the Rings

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, Peter Jackson, 2001, 5 points

The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, Peter Jackson, 2002, 27 points

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, Peter Jackson, 2003, 27 points

I gazed at the screen throughout the trilogy feeling simply overwhelmed. That co-writer/director Peter Jackson got the financing to make three pictures at once from what many considered an unadaptable source was a remarkable accomplishment in and of itself. That he made one of the great trilogies of all time in the process, in all its epic glory, was nothing short of a miracle. Revolutionizing special effects and still at one with the fundamentals of story, character, and suspense, this was simply the film of the decade. This time, the ordinary ticket-buyer got it right: "The Return of the King" (and the trilogy as a whole) was as exciting and exhausting and illuminating as movies come. - Danny Baldwin
