553 - You Aught to Know - Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind - #10

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Michel Gondry, 2004, 38 points

For me, the last effect of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind comes down to its final moments. Joel (Jim Carrey) and Clementine (Kate Winslet) reunite, but without a memory of their failed relationship. It's often read as a happy ending, yet isn't history destined to repeat itself? Love alone isn't enough for a relationship to survive, but how can one learn that lesson without experience? Our most painful memories are among the most valuable, even if shouldering them is a burden. Charlie Kaufman's screenplay understands this, and expresses this idea with an actutely bittersweet acknowledgement that it's a necessary evil for personal growth. Without confronting our experiences, we'll always repeat our mistakes. - James Frazier
